  • Philanthropy Mentorship | Mineral Nation

Philanthropy, Mentoring & Scholarship Being MINfluential... Many who self-reflect on this hobby often recall mentors who taught and shared their knowledge or events that created a growth opportunity. Maybe it was the gift of a specimen, or some advice on making a purchase, or simply the receipt of a used mineral magazine. Passing on historical knowledge is an essential element to the mineral hobby and growing the Mineral Nation continues to require such an investment. Seemingly insignificant gestures can create truly positive effects for the rising collector population. The future content of this area will discuss ways that one can give back to those learning the hobby while also creating a new way to enjoy it. Think about YOUR role as we build this one out... Back

  • Displaying | Mineral Nation

Back Let there be light... The minerals we collect have typically been hidden in darkness for millions of years. Ironically, their beauty can only be appreciated away from their native environment. Like waking up in the morning, a little attention to appearance can bring out the best. Regardless of the "value" of your collection. These pieces are important to you. Your desire to enjoy (and hopefully share) can be enhanced in a number of ways and also fit different budgets. These same techniques also translate well into improving retail displays. The future content of this area will leverage the advice of industry experts to discuss and demonstrate the following: Display costs versus display goals Retail vs. private display How to clean and not clean specimens Specimen trimming Mineral repair/restoration options S ensitivities to l ight, heat, humidity, and other minerals Display themes or categories Non-mineral objects Labeling considerations Optimum spacing between minerals Stands, risers, bases, pedestals, and mounts Mirrors Cabinet interior color options. Shelving materials, thickness, height and spacing Lighting considerations (intensity, heat buildup, Kelvin warmth, angles, front/backlighting, custom vs. kits.) Protections from natural disasters and home accidents Security of specimens from theft Insurance More to come, Back
